About the position

The FRIB Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) at Michigan State University is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing critical administrative functions within the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The CAO will manage various departments, ensure efficient operations, and drive continuous improvement in administrative services to support the laboratory's mission in nuclear science. This position requires strategic planning, project management, and the ability to foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of administrative functions including Accounting, Administrative Support, Communications, Export Control, Human Resources, and Physical Security.
  • Work with the Laboratory Director to improve administrative services delivery by setting performance metrics and solving complex problems.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate teams and workflows to ensure efficient operations and timely execution of tasks.
  • Track and manage schedules and deadlines for streamlined workflows.
  • Provide clear reports on performance against metrics and goals for all administrative functions.
  • Adapt to changing circumstances and adjust strategies to ensure successful completion of high-impact work.
  • Develop strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • PhD, JD, MS, or similar advanced degree.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible work experience in administration, project management, or program development.
  • Experience leading and managing multiple administrative functions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to drive streamlined workflows and resolve bottlenecks.
  • Experience ensuring adherence to policies and preparing detailed reports for stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills to articulate complex ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Experience establishing performance metrics and conducting assessments to ensure project goals are met.
  • Proven ability to manage diverse teams and deliver results under pressure.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks, preferably with DOE Office of Science.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the DOE Office of Science is preferred.
