About the position

The Front-End Driver position at GFL Environmental involves operating front-end trucks to collect and transport waste and recyclables from various residential and commercial routes. The role is crucial in ensuring the cleanliness and safety of communities by providing reliable waste management services. Drivers will interact with customers, perform vehicle inspections, and maintain safety standards while fulfilling their daily routes.

Responsibilities

  • Drive commercial frontload or ancillary equipment along designated routes to collect solid waste and transport it to post-collection facilities.
  • Open container enclosures or gates to access cans and roll 3-4-yard cans into position for dumping as needed.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections and submit a vehicle condition report at the end of the shift.
  • Interact courteously with customers and the general public along the route to answer questions or respond to requests.
  • Notify supervisor of issues requiring management action and clean loose trash off the truck and surrounding area during the dumping process.
  • Maintain and submit a logbook, daily route/productivity sheet, and vehicle condition report as required by law or company policy.
  • Maneuver the truck into and out of minimum clearance spaces using mirrors to back up and locate service addresses using a key map and GPS.
  • Follow safe operating practices, including lock out/tag out procedures, and comply with all safety standards and regulations.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of commercial truck driving experience or a CDL school certificate.
  • Ability to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control operations of equipment and maneuver the truck into and out of minimum clearance spaces.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable waste materials.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and a commitment to continuous improvement.
