About the position

As a Front-End Driver at GFL Industries, you will be responsible for operating front-end trucks that provide essential waste removal and recycling services to a variety of multi-family residential and commercial routes. This role involves servicing multiple customers each day according to assigned routes, ensuring that waste is efficiently collected and transported to the appropriate disposal or recycling facilities. You will play a crucial role in fulfilling customer contracts by maintaining high standards of service and safety throughout your daily operations. Your primary duties will include driving commercial frontload trucks along designated routes to mechanically collect solid waste and transport it to post-collection facilities. You will need to open container enclosures or gates to access waste cans, and as necessary, roll 3-4-yard cans into position for dumping. Daily pre- and post-trip inspections of the vehicle are mandatory, and you will be required to complete and submit a vehicle condition report at the end of each shift. Customer interaction is a key aspect of this position, as you will courteously engage with customers and the general public along your route, addressing any questions or requests they may have. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining a clean work environment by cleaning up any loose trash that spills during the dumping process. You will also be required to maintain and submit various logs and reports, including a DOT logbook, daily route/productivity sheets, and vehicle condition reports, in compliance with legal and company policies. Maneuvering the truck in and out of tight spaces using mirrors and GPS for navigation is essential, as is adherence to all relevant DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and EPA regulations. This position may also involve performing other job-related duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Drive commercial frontload or ancillary equipment along designated routes to mechanically collect solid waste and take to post-collection facilities.
  • Open container enclosures or gates to access cans and roll 3-4-yard cans into position for dumping as needed.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections and submit a vehicle condition report at the end of the shift.
  • Interact courteously with customers and the general public along the route to answer questions or respond to requests.
  • Clean loose trash off of the truck and/or ground around the truck and container that spills during the dumping process.
  • Maintain and submit a DOT logbook, daily route/productivity sheet, and vehicle condition report as required by law or company policy.
  • Maneuver the truck into and out of minimum clearance spaces using mirrors to back up.
  • Use a key map and GPS to locate service addresses.
  • Follow safe operating practices, including lock out/tag out procedures to ensure proper operation of the truck.
  • Monitor operations to detect loose debris and visually scan customer sites before and after dumping.
  • Adhere to all DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and EPA regulations and standards.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired.
  • Possess valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Minimum one (1) year of commercial driving experience OR CDL school certificate.
  • Must be able to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.
  • Knowledge of the truck and its components and the basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control operations of equipment and maneuver the truck into and out of minimum clearance spaces using mirrors.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable waste (such as gasoline or other flammable materials).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to accept and adapt to change as well as a commitment to seek continuous improvement.
  • Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
