About the position

The Front-End WordPress Developer at Georgetown University is responsible for developing and maintaining the front-end logic of the university's websites and applications. This role involves collaborating with other developers to create and manage themes and functionalities for an enterprise WordPress content management system, ensuring that the code is standards-compliant, accessible, and reusable. The developer will also provide technical support, documentation, and mentorship to junior team members, contributing to the overall development workflow and deployment processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain front-end display code for Georgetown websites.
  • Develop and maintain WordPress functionality, including blocks, themes, and post editor customizations.
  • Review code and cross-train with other developers.
  • Provide technical support and documentation.
  • Contribute to development workflow and deployment processes.
  • Train and mentor junior technical contributors and vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, communications, or design preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in maintenance and design of relevant enterprise systems.
  • Strong understanding of semantic and accessible HTML, including experience with front-end templating languages like Twig.
  • Proficiency in CSS, with a deep understanding of CSS internals and responsive design principles.
  • Experience with preprocessors and frameworks like Sass, and strong experience writing JavaScript for interactive website elements.
  • Proficiency in creating accessible and responsive WordPress themes and comfort with git-based development and deployment workflow.
  • Basic comfort with PHP programming language.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail with demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships within the department and across functional and geographic reporting lines.
  • Ability to lead the research, design, development, and documentation of large complex projects with little guidance.
  • Self-starter and fast learner with good work ethics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with front-end JavaScript libraries like ReactJS.
  • Proficiency in working with WordPress APIs, especially the Gutenberg API.
  • WP-CLI custom command development experience.
