About the position

The Teaching Assistant at Abiqua School plays a vital role in supporting the educational environment for primary grade students, specifically in first and second grades. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about education and are eager to contribute to the learning and development of young children. The assistant will begin their day in the classroom at 8:00 am, collaborating closely with the lead teacher(s) to enhance the curriculum and utilize available resources effectively. The role requires flexibility, as the assistant may also be called upon to support instruction in other grade levels as needed. In addition to classroom responsibilities, the Teaching Assistant is integral to maintaining a safe and enriching environment for students. This includes supervising students during recess and lunch, ensuring their safety and engagement in activities. The assistant will also work with the After School Care supervisor to provide supervision and activities for children after school hours. The position may require stepping into the lead teacher role during the teacher's absence, necessitating a preferred qualification in teaching, particularly with English Language Development (ELD). The Teaching Assistant is expected to uphold the mission, philosophy, and policies of Abiqua School, contributing positively to the school community. This includes maintaining confidentiality, attending staff meetings, and engaging in professional development to enhance their skills and effectiveness in the role. The assistant will utilize positive discipline techniques, encourage student independence, and foster a supportive learning environment that promotes exploration and problem-solving among students.

Responsibilities

  • Work cooperatively under the supervision of the Childcare Director and teachers.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings as required.
  • Support the teachers and follow their direction, sharing ideas for improvement when appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality in communication with the school community.
  • Assist teachers in establishing a safe and enriched environment for children.
  • Use positive discipline techniques to support children's problem-solving skills.
  • Encourage student independence while providing necessary support and affection.
  • Supervise activities and games on the playground, ensuring all students are visible at all times.
  • Interact positively with children and adults in the school community.
  • Keep the classroom orderly and assist in setting up activities before class starts.
  • Direct parents with concerns to the appropriate staff members.
  • Substitute in the classroom as needed.
  • Meet employment conditions including CPR and First Aid certification, enrollment in the Central Background Registry, and possession of a current Food Handler's Card.

Requirements

  • Preferred qualification as a teacher with ELD certification.
  • Certified and current in CPR and First Aid.
  • Enrolled in the Central Background Registry.
  • Possess a current Food Handler's Card.
