About the position

The Fuel Handling Mechanical Design Engineer position at Protingent Staffing involves designing nuclear fuel handling equipment and components, providing technical direction, and ensuring compliance with design codes. The role requires collaboration with various engineering disciplines and oversight of supplier projects, with a focus on delivering high-quality design work and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Design nuclear fuel handling equipment and components from requirements through final design.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, ensuring delivery of data and other deliverables.
  • Identify and apply correct design codes into the design of plant systems such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA.
  • Complete designs of equipment, processes, and components using engineering and scientific principles.
  • Conduct calculations, develop drawings, and utilize engineering tools like SolidWorks, ANSYS, Mathcad, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
  • Write technical reports detailing design work and coordinate interdepartmental activities.
  • Present design results for reviews and oversee technical areas within projects.
  • Provide guidance to engineers on nuclear and non-nuclear design standards.
  • Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria to complex mechanical and process system designs.
  • Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages, including P&IDs and 3D models.
  • Establish and maintain system requirements and specification documents for major plant equipment.
  • Propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification and provide oversight during test execution.
  • Generate design packages for systems, sub-systems, and equipment designs, including calculations and design reports.
  • Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports and design reviews.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university.
  • 3-8 years of direct experience with proven mechanical design skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of complex mechanical systems, particularly nuclear fuel handling equipment.
  • Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration is highly desired.
  • Experience with remote tooling design is preferred.
  • Experience with hot cell/glove box design/operations is preferred.
  • Previous experience with nuclear reactors or similar high-performance system design is required.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a design team's effort with minimal direction.
  • Ability to handle projects with competing objectives and design constraints.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1.
