About the position

The Fuels Scientific Lead at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is responsible for providing technical expertise to support the development of the division's scientific strategy within the Fuels PIE department. This role involves leading research and experimentation related to advanced nuclear fuels and materials, overseeing post-irradiation examinations, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance the understanding and application of nuclear fuel cycle processes.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with ongoing research development activities for assigned nuclear facility at INL.
  • Complete research in multiple nuclear specialties.
  • Lead the planning, designing, and analyzing irradiation experiments to evaluate the performance of advanced nuclear fuels and materials.
  • Develop post-irradiation examination plans, oversee data collection, reduction and analysis of performance data, and publish results in internal reports and open literature.
  • Analyze and evaluate data from experiments on different fuel and cladding concepts.
  • Collaborate with other INL PIE scientists and modeling experts to expand understanding and application of PIE experiments.
  • Work closely with INL program leadership, industry partners, and collaborators to assess performance of nuclear fuels and cladding through post-irradiation examinations.
  • Author or contribute to publications in area of specialty and present results at conferences.
  • Establish relationships with universities to develop partnerships supporting PIE and improve INL mission.
  • Maintain a PIE strategy that guides deployment of new research areas and capabilities within fuels PIE and performance assessment.
  • Be a role model by contributing to peer-reviewed publications, reports, proposals, and intellectual property.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in nuclear science, engineering, or related discipline.
  • Level 5 - Masters and 8 years of relevant experience or PhD and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Level 6 - Masters and 12 years of relevant experience or PhD and 10 years of experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of nuclear fuels and materials, irradiation testing, and post-irradiation examination.
  • Proven record of strategic initiative development and ability to lead PIE program of national relevance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy 'L' clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
