About the position

Rowan Technology is seeking a talented and agile Software Developer to join our growing team that builds innovative digital learning products. This hybrid position is based out of our NYC office, although we are open to considering remote candidates for the right fit. As a NYC-based digital publisher and interactive technology company, Rowan has recently expanded its operations to include full-scale print academic publishing and will soon rebrand as the West Point Press. With tens of thousands of existing users across many universities and the general public, the reach of Rowan's digital publishing is extensive and well-regarded, and this audience is actively expanding. In this role, you will lead the software development efforts for the digital side of our new organization. Your responsibilities will include the maintenance and improvement of a proprietary, cross-platform ebook distribution and reading app, a complex ebook building app, and an admin and ecommerce backend to support these applications. You will be tasked with the development and implementation of cloud-based applications, feature development, system improvement, refactoring, error monitoring and bug fixes, code review, system architecture development and improvements, security updates, and scaling systems for additional users. Additionally, you will provide support for front-end development as needed. This position requires full stack competency, particularly in back-end development, and the ability to work independently. You will join a small, interdisciplinary team experienced in design, software development, publishing, cartography, and marketing. This role is ideal for someone who desires both agency in their work and the opportunity to make a significant impact for a large audience. Candidates should have at least 2 years of professional experience working with cloud-based web applications, and management or leadership experience is preferable. Remote candidates will be considered, but local candidates in New York, NY are preferred. Please note that candidates must be eligible to work in the US (Citizens or Green Card holders), as we cannot sponsor visas.
