About the position

The Custodian position at Northwestern University is a vital role within the Residential Services department, which aims to foster a community environment for students through various housing-related services. The position is specifically for the 3rd Shift Custodian/Maintenance Technician, with a work schedule from Saturday to Wednesday, 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM. The pay rate for this position ranges from $17.25 to $17.50 per hour. The custodian will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in residential facilities, ensuring that all areas are well-kept and conducive to a positive living environment for students. The custodian will utilize various machines and tools to perform cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing surfaces. Responsibilities also include light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and lubricating locks, as well as collecting and disposing of debris from various areas within the buildings. The role requires attention to detail and the ability to report any maintenance issues to the supervisor promptly. The custodian will also be expected to maintain supplies in lavatories and other common areas, ensuring that necessary items such as soap and towels are always available. In addition to the primary responsibilities, the custodian may be assigned miscellaneous duties as needed, contributing to the overall functionality and cleanliness of the residential facilities. Responsibilities

  • Uses machines or other tools as needed to clean, renovate, and renew floor surface finishes.
  • Sweeps, dry mops, wet mops, or machine scrubs and waxes floors.
  • Sweeps and shovels snow or removes debris from steps and walks.
  • Vacuums rugs and carpets; moves furniture, office equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Provides light maintenance services such as replacing light bulbs and lubricating locks.
  • Collects and places debris in containers for removal by truck from various areas.
  • Cleans, dusts, washes, and polishes furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, and related furnishings.
  • Cleans and services lavatories, toilet rooms, and keeps units supplied with necessary items.
  • Reports any repair problems or negative conditions to the supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record with no more than one major moving violation or one accident in the past year.
  • Ability to stand for up to 7.5 hours, bend, climb, stoop, and manipulate moderately heavy equipment.
  • Ability to lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to transport items outdoors during all types of weather.
  • Ability to perform cleaning of bodily fluids.
  • Knowledge of institutional or commercial cleaning methods, techniques, and equipment.
  • General knowledge of tools and equipment for conference activities.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers and residents.
  • Knowledge of procedures for accident reporting.
  • Ability to perform duties promptly and efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to be flexible to meet the needs of residents.
  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment.
  • General math comprehension.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
