About the position

The Swarthmore Public Library is seeking a full-time Library Director to manage its operations starting January 2nd, 2025. The Director will collaborate with the Library Board and staff to serve the community of Swarthmore Borough and Delaware County, overseeing a budget of approximately $500,000 and a team of 3 full-time and 3 part-time employees, along with volunteers. The role emphasizes effective management, community engagement, and strategic planning to enhance library services and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage library operations and day-to-day activities.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and develop library staff.
  • Oversee library finances and manage a budget of approximately $300,000.
  • Ensure progress on library renovation projects, including liaising with architects and managing capital campaigns.
  • Maintain collection development and library services.
  • Develop and manage fundraising events.
  • Work with the Library Board to establish and implement policies.
  • Attend Board meetings and keep the Board informed of library activities.
  • Maintain relationships with local community organizations and residents.

Requirements

  • Completed at least 2 academic years of college education and 9 credit hours of library science course.
  • Minimum of 2 years progressive experience in a supervisory position.
  • Knowledge and experience with financial management and human resources.
  • FBI and PA criminal background check and PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Effective management skills with the ability to lead staff.
  • Past experience leading or contributing to a library remodel.
  • Strong communication skills for managing relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Commitment to quality customer service and professional development.
  • Knowledge of library fundraising activities.
  • Ability to represent and advocate on behalf of the library.
