About the position

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is seeking a full-time tenure-track faculty member for the English and Communication Studies Department within the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This position focuses on developmental English and English as an additional language, with the successful candidate expected to oversee the College English preparation courses and curricula. Candidates should have a strong interdisciplinary background and demonstrate research and teaching experience in areas such as rhetoric, writing studies, language acquisition, or linguistics. A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice is essential for this role. The faculty member will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative curricula that cater to culturally and linguistically diverse students. They will also be expected to engage in active research within their fields of expertise and contribute to the college and their discipline in various capacities. The position requires a dynamic approach to teaching, with an emphasis on creating an inclusive classroom environment that encourages effective communication across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Candidates should possess expertise in guiding students through rhetorical theory and writing pedagogy, fostering critical thinking and engagement with diverse perspectives. Faculty members are expected to maintain active participation in professional practices and scholarship, mentoring colleagues and representing FIT at professional organizations. They will also be expected to collaborate with colleagues to enhance the visibility of writing and rhetorical scholarship at FIT, contributing to the mission of developing reflective, critical, and engaged citizens of the world.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the College English preparation courses and curricula.
  • Engage in active research in the fields of rhetoric, writing studies, language acquisition, or linguistics.
  • Develop and implement innovative curricula for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Create a dynamic classroom environment that encourages effective communication across cultural and linguistic boundaries.
  • Adapt course materials to incorporate new innovations within and outside of the discipline.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional delivery methods and emerging technologies to improve student learning.
  • Encourage student interaction, collaboration, teamwork, and cooperation in the learning process.
  • Maintain active participation in professional practices and scholarship.
  • Mentor faculty within the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and across the College.
  • Represent FIT with innovative scholarship at professional organizations.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Literacy Studies, Developmental English, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field (ABDs considered).
  • Experience teaching developmental English, basic writing, and/or English as an additional language in a higher education setting.
  • Experience teaching diverse student populations with varying levels of language knowledge and skills.
  • Record of academic research and publication, professional activities, and successful college-level teaching.
  • Familiarity with both online and hybrid learning environments.
