About the position

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) is seeking a full-time Life Sciences Instructor to join our faculty team. Located in Redding, California, Shasta College is dedicated to providing equitable education outcomes for a diverse student population. As a Life Sciences Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching a variety of courses, including Anatomy, Physiology, Human Biology, and General Biology, both in-person and online. You will engage with students from diverse backgrounds, facilitating equitable outcomes and contributing to their academic and personal growth. The position requires a commitment to continuous improvement in instruction and programs, as well as participation in professional development activities to enhance teaching effectiveness. In this role, you will be expected to develop and implement course materials, maintain regular communication with students, provide timely feedback, and assess student learning outcomes. You will also participate in curriculum development, program review, and governance processes within the college. The position offers a unique opportunity to empower students and contribute to the educational mission of Shasta College, which serves over 11,000 students annually.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned classes and laboratories according to the academic calendar.
  • Develop and implement instructional materials consistent with course outlines and District guidelines.
  • Maintain online course components for hybrid and online courses, ensuring regular student contact.
  • Distribute syllabi to students during the first week of class, outlining course objectives and requirements.
  • Provide timely feedback to students and return graded work promptly.
  • Assign final grades in accordance with District policy and California Education Code.
  • Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner.
  • Refer students to tutoring and related services as needed.
  • Supervise students in off-campus activities as required by the course.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours for student assistance and academic support.
  • Participate in professional development to stay current in the discipline.
  • Submit required administrative paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Participate in curriculum review and develop new courses as needed.
  • Attend department and division meetings and participate in governance processes.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in any biological science or a Bachelor's degree in any biological science with a Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and colleagues.
  • Ability to design and deliver courses in various modalities (in-person, online, hybrid).
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of current subject matter and teaching practices.
