About the position

The Photo Editor at KQED plays a crucial role in enhancing high-impact visual journalism by collaborating with photographers, editors, reporters, and the visual team. This position involves managing a small team, taking photos, going on assignments, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality images across multiple platforms. The editor will also lead discussions on ethical considerations in photo selection and representation, fostering a culture of equity and belonging within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with reporters and editors across KQED to ensure accurate and engaging photo (or video) coverage of assignments
  • Photographs assignments, as needed
  • Manages the KQED News photographer and KQED News's visual internship program
  • Works with the photographer, Digital News Assignment Editor, and other stakeholders across various KQED departments to finalize photo and custom illustration requests
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of our photos and captions
  • Acts as liaison between photographers, editors, reporters, and sources to coordinate and schedule photoshoots
  • Identifies and advises editors of possible feature photos or photo essays, both on KQED.org or standalone items on engagement platforms
  • Pitches visual essays for projects and breaking news
  • Helps direct and coordinate photographers for breaking news and in disaster zones
  • Photo edits images from photographers in the field for breaking news events
  • Coordinates with social media team to create engaging visual posts
  • Works with freelancers to assign and manage assignments
  • Manage freelance photo budget across KQED
  • Manage licensing requests
  • Edits photos in Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop as needed

Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • At least one year experience in a similar role in a newsroom or news environment, bilingual newsroom preferred
  • Proven collaboration skills essential for working with fellow KQED staffers across departments and with partner organizations
  • Experience navigating the front and back end of a content management system
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to stay focused, organized, and proactive
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Experience with copy editing multimedia content such as graphics, interactives, or videos

Benefits

  • Annual Salary Range: $93,000- $116,000
  • Hybrid work environment between KQED's headquarters and remote work
  • Full-time limited term position for 3 months
