About the position

Optum, a dynamic health care organization in the Tri-State region, is seeking a Phlebotomist to join our team. This role is crucial in providing high-quality care to our patients across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. As a Phlebotomist, you will perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on a diverse patient population, including adults, neonates, and pediatric patients. Your responsibilities will also include collecting urine specimens, performing EKG and spirometry tests, and participating in the training of new personnel. You will work with state-of-the-art technology and collaborate with brilliant co-workers who share your passion for helping people feel their best. In this position, you will be responsible for blood collection using various techniques such as vacutainer, syringe, and butterfly methods, as well as capillary punctures through heel and fingerstick techniques. You will ensure that specimens are identified and labeled correctly, instruct patients on urine and stool collection procedures, and enter accessioning data into the computer system. Additionally, you will prepare specimens for send-out testing, manage inventory supplies, and maintain phlebotomy stations to ensure effective blood collection. Your role will also involve attending required meetings and enhancing your professional growth through in-service meetings and educational programs. You will be expected to provide quality customer service to patients and visitors, communicate effectively with co-workers, management staff, and physicians, and maintain patient confidentiality at all times. The position requires a strong ability to work cooperatively as a team member while balancing the support of physicians and adhering to financial policies established by CareMount Medical and ASCW. You will demonstrate professionalism in your appearance and actions with patients, staff, physicians, and administrators, ensuring a comfortable and respectful environment for all.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, neonates, and pediatric patients.
  • Collect urine specimens and perform EKG and spirometry tests on adult and pediatric patients.
  • Instruct patients regarding urine and stool collection procedures.
  • Enter accessioning data into the computer system.
  • Prepare specimens for send-out testing and manage inventory supplies.
  • Maintain phlebotomy stations for effective blood collection.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in professional development programs.
  • Provide surgical scheduling, precertification, and scheduling maintenance for surgeries for one or more physicians.
  • Deliver quality customer service to patients and visitors courteously and promptly.
  • Communicate patient financial responsibility and secure prepayment from patients according to established policies.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of phlebotomy experience (additional appropriate education may substitute for minimum experience requirement).
  • Certification from an accredited phlebotomy diploma program (preferred).
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques for blood, urine, and stool collection.
  • Understanding of container and minimum volume requirements for specimen collection.
  • Knowledge regarding the technical correctness of EKG and spirometry printouts.
  • Skill in labeling and dispersing specimens to appropriate stations.
  • Ability to interact with patients from diverse physical and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, laboratory staff, and medical staff.
