About the position

The Funeral Attendant role is a support position that involves a variety of manual and office tasks to ensure the smooth operation of funeral services. This includes preparing the deceased and casket, setting up rooms for ceremonies, greeting visitors, and assisting with transportation. The role requires flexibility to work beyond standard business hours, including weekends and holidays, to meet the needs of families during their time of loss.

Responsibilities

• Prepare casket and deceased for visitation or funeral services, including dressing the casket and adjusting clothing and jewelry.
• Prepare rooms for services by setting up and cleaning chairs, tables, and other materials.
• Greet visitors, provide programs, and answer questions about funeral services.
• May serve as a pallbearer during services.
• Drive families to cemetery sites as needed.
• After services, remove, clean, and properly store company property, and package or deliver family mementos and flowers.
• Answer phones and screen callers, taking first call information.
• Notify staff when appointments arrive and escort guests to the appropriate room.
• Maintain the reception area, including making coffee and disposing of trash.
• Review documents for accuracy and perform data entry into proprietary systems.
• Receive deliveries and perform mailroom tasks such as copying and scanning.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Valid state issued driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
• No prior work experience is required, but funeral industry experience is preferred.
• Ability to follow instructions given over the phone or in person.
• Ability to use a personal computer and type effectively.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others and maintain composure in challenging situations.
• Good verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with kindness and compassion for the deceased and their families.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 200 pounds.

Nice-to-haves

• Funeral industry experience preferred.
