The Special Education Teacher at Sherwood High School is responsible for providing direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities. This role requires collaboration with general education teachers to ensure that students receive the necessary support to succeed academically. The teacher will monitor and evaluate the outcomes for students with disabilities, ensuring that their educational needs are met effectively. A significant part of the job involves assisting in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique requirements. The teacher will work under the direction of the school principal and the special education supervisor, contributing to a supportive educational environment for all students. In addition to direct teaching responsibilities, the Special Education Teacher will be expected to have a thorough understanding of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum relevant to the grade and content area. Knowledge of the MCPS special education program is essential, as is familiarity with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015) and the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004). The teacher must be adept in differentiated instruction, data collection, and best instructional practices, particularly in research-based reading instruction and multicultural education. The ability to adapt instructional programs and materials to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities is crucial. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, and guardians. They should also be knowledgeable about the performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS). This position is full-time, requiring a commitment of 80 hours bi-weekly over a 10-month schedule, and is classified as a day job.
