About the position

An internationally renowned contemporary art gallery has an opportunity for a full-time Gallery Assistant position in its San Francisco location. The ideal candidate will be providing support to the Associate and Registrar teams with coordinating exhibitions and art fairs, producing press releases and newsletters, managing social media, maintaining the website and other online databases. Requirements include knowledge of art and the contemporary art market, gallery administrative experience, press outreach experience, and social media experience. Successful candidates will be personable, highly motivated, and have excellent verbal and written skills. This position is not hybrid and requires in-person attendance at the gallery, with a schedule of Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with additional hours and travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day-to-day gallery operations and administration including acquisitions.
  • Execute events at the gallery from start to finish, including regularly scheduled exhibition changes/openings and gallery dinners.
  • Manage art fair participation and logistics, including submitting applications, adhering to deadlines, ensuring appropriate bookings, booth planning and execution, and representing the gallery at said fairs.
  • Prepare artwork presentation PDFs, contact spreadsheets, comprehensive press packets, and daily cash reports.
  • Assist with communications, including producing e-blasts, performing outreach to other art institutions, and liaising with press.
  • Oversee research and publication projects, continually coordinating with teams on both coasts.
  • Maintain Artsy, Artlogic database, and gallery website to reflect up-to-date exhibitions, press, and artist information.

Requirements

  • B.A. or B.F.A from a four-year college or university (arts-related field preferred).
  • Minimum 1 year of gallery experience or art field equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of art history and trends in the contemporary art market.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, Asana, Slack, Canva, and art databases (Art Logic, Gallery Manager, and any other equivalent).
  • Understanding of handling fine artworks and basic installation.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Marketing or project management skills is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, flexible, and able to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
