About the position

The Gallery Services Officer position at the McNay Art Museum is a part-time role that offers an hourly pay of $14.00. This position is primarily focused on ensuring the safety and security of the museum's galleries while providing excellent customer service to visitors. The officer will work under the direct supervision of the Security and Safety Manager or their designee, and will be responsible for monitoring the galleries to protect the artworks from theft, vandalism, or inadvertent damage. The role requires a proactive approach to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all museum guests. Key responsibilities include observing assigned galleries, performing gallery opening and closing duties, and ensuring that visitors maintain a proper distance from the artworks. The officer will also conduct regular art counts and verify the movement of artworks within the galleries. In addition to security duties, the officer will provide information to visitors about museum rules and policies, direct them to various facilities, and report any security issues or environmental hazards to the appropriate personnel. Participation in training sessions related to safety, first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures is also a critical aspect of this role. The Gallery Services Officer may be called upon to assist in medical emergencies involving visitors or staff and is expected to complete appropriate reports as necessary. This position requires a high level of integrity, good verbal communication skills, and the ability to maintain a professional appearance while interacting with the public. The officer must be alert, have good concentration skills, and be able to stand for long periods. Reliable transportation is essential, and the ability to work weekends and holidays is a requirement of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor established rules in the galleries to protect works of art from theft, vandalism, or inadvertent damage.
  • Perform gallery opening and closing duties, ensuring visitors maintain proper distance from objects.
  • Conduct regular art counts and verify art movement within the galleries.
  • Report any security issues or damage to an object to a security officer.
  • Provide information to visitors regarding museum rules and policies for their safety and the safety of the artworks.
  • Direct visitors to exhibitions, exits, restrooms, and telephones.
  • Report water leaks and problems with access points (doors or windows).
  • Report security, safety, or environmental hazards to a security officer.
  • Participate in training sessions in safety, first aid, CPR, fire, and disaster procedures.
  • Assist in medical emergencies involving visitors or staff and summon medical assistance when necessary.
  • Complete appropriate reports.

Requirements

  • No previous experience in security is necessary.
  • Must have a high level of integrity and be tactful and courteous in dealing with visitors, staff, vendors, and consultants.
  • Good verbal skills are required, particularly for communicating with visitors and on the radio.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance and be alert with good concentration skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills are desirable.
  • Must be in good general health and able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Good eyesight (adjusted) and hearing (adjusted) are required.
  • Clear verbal articulation is required for radio communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in customer service is preferred.
