About the position

The Gardener position within the Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of gardens and landscapes. This role involves performing manual and occasional clerical work, focusing on landscaping and horticultural duties to enhance public green spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Perform landscaping and horticultural duties including cultivating planted beds, turf areas, digging, planting, fertilizing, trimming and pruning shrubs, trees, flowers, and temporary floral displays.
  • Carry out seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, mulching, and pest and weed control as necessary.
  • Maintain garden nursery and perform basic maintenance on gardening power and hand tools.
  • Monitor, set up, and perform basic repairs on irrigation systems.
  • Open and close facilities as needed and as directed.
  • Facilitate the activities of volunteers, contractual labor, and other Village departments.
  • Research horticultural topics pertinent to job functions.
  • Assist the Horticulturist in landscape and garden design and maintaining plant records.
  • Interact with and inform the public on pertinent horticultural topics and garden information.
  • Teach gardening classes and lead tours.
  • Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for various functions and programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • General knowledge of South Florida plants, horticulture, and landscape design.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in horticulture, gardening, and grounds maintenance.
  • Field skill in the use of cutting and power tools.
  • Physical ability to perform duties, which may require walking, crawling, kneeling, or standing for prolonged periods.
  • Good corrected eyesight, including depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors.
  • High ethical, honesty, and moral standards.
  • Fluency in English; ability to communicate in Spanish is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a licensed driver status in the State of Florida.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds and move up to 200 pounds of bulk loads.
  • Ability to observe workplace safety precautions.
  • Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Basic computer use and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.
