About the position

The Gardener Technician II at Philadelphia Zoo plays a crucial role in maintaining the zoo's grounds, gardens, and landscapes. This position involves performing skilled gardening duties, operating equipment, and ensuring safety standards are met. The Gardener Technician II will work closely with the Manager of Horticulture and Lead Groundskeeper, contributing to the horticulture department's growth and development while providing training and supervision to other staff and volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular and special project tasks as directed through the work order system.
  • Ensure work is performed safely and complies with safety guidelines and protocols.
  • Identify appropriate safety equipment and materials for work.
  • Contribute to department SOPs and best practices in horticulture.
  • Assist in preparing labor and material estimates and scheduling for projects.
  • Stay updated in the horticulture field and pursue career development opportunities.
  • Assist in training and coaching lower-tiered staff and interns.
  • Update record keeping in the Work Order Management platform.
  • Coordinate assigned work with various departments and staff.
  • Oversee the work of assigned employees, interns, or volunteers as needed.
  • Perform various gardening tasks including planting, transplanting, and maintaining plants.
  • Maintain horticulture and arboriculture exhibits in public and non-public areas.
  • Apply fertilizers and pesticides as required and maintain records of applications.
  • Operate and maintain horticultural equipment and tools.
  • Assist with greenhouse operations and perform other maintenance duties as required.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in horticulture or related field and four years of related experience.
  • Experience operating equipment including front-end loader and backhoe.
  • Must have or obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide License within six months of employment.
  • Proficient in using computers and software utilized by the department.
  • Knowledge of woody plants, herbaceous plants, turf management, and pest management practices.
  • Ability to interpret written job specifications and design drawings.
  • Ability to manage materials, equipment, and labor for projects.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license and good driving record.
