About the position

The Gas Controller position at Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc. is a critical role responsible for the daily monitoring and operation of the company's pipeline system. This position plays a vital part in controlling gas volumes and pressures in a manner that is safe, reliable, and efficient. The Gas Controller will be tasked with satisfying customer needs while adhering to regulatory requirements and company policies. The role is designed to maximize throughput and minimize fuel use, all while providing the necessary flexibility and reliability to the system. The Gas Controller will ensure optimum control, system availability, and data integrity, which are essential for the smooth operation of the pipeline. In this role, the Gas Controller will participate in planning, scheduling, and implementing facility operations, including shutdowns and start-ups, to maintain system pressure and volume. Responsibilities include starting and stopping engines to maintain system volume and pressure, loading engines, and balancing horsepower to operate the system efficiently. The Gas Controller will set operating pressure and volume limits for station operators and SCADA stations, anticipate changes in demand based on temperature and time, and manage the injection and withdrawal from storage fields to maintain a balanced system supply. The position also requires monitoring the system using SCADA alarms, computer screens, and telephone communications to notify appropriate parties for operational changes or repairs. The Gas Controller must ensure that horsepower requirements are balanced with system load and make necessary adjustments in system operations to compensate for engine shutdowns or supply losses. In emergency situations, adherence to the Emergency Plan and Preparedness Manual is crucial. The Gas Controller will also be responsible for maintaining accurate daily reports, keeping files organized, and ensuring compliance with all administrative policies. Successful completion of all Operator Qualification tasks within one year of the start date is a requirement for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in planning, scheduling, and implementing facility operations, shutdowns, and start-ups to maintain system pressure and volume.
  • Start and stop engines to maintain system volume and pressure.
  • Load engines and balance horsepower to operate the system efficiently.
  • Set operating pressure and volume limits for station operators and SCADA stations.
  • Anticipate changes in demand which are dependent upon temperature and time.
  • Inject and withdraw from storage fields to maintain a system supply balance.
  • Ensure that no transportation volumes are lost due to dispatcher action/decision.
  • Monitor system using SCADA alarms, computer screens, and telephone calls so appropriate parties can be notified to make changes in operations or schedule repairs.
  • Ensure that horsepower requirements are balanced with system load.
  • Assure necessary changes are made in system operation to compensate for engine shutdowns or loss of supply.
  • Follow the plans in the Emergency Plan and Preparedness Manual during emergency situations on our system.
  • Adhere to all Control Room Management (CRM) policies and procedures as outlined by PHMSA.
  • Receive and screen telephone calls, reply to other pipeline companies, gas control departments, and notify appropriate personnel for specific situations.
  • Record all pressures and volumes received from field personnel or SCADA on a daily and hourly basis.
  • Ensure daily reports are accurate and legible.
  • Keep all files and records up to date, organized, and maintained in accordance with departmental and company policy.
  • Observe all administrative policies.
  • Successfully complete all Operator Qualification tasks within one (1) year of start date.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum: Associate's degree or equivalent experience.
