About the position

The Gas Distribution Technician 3 is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) equipment and performing fusion processes for gas infrastructure projects. This role involves installing underground conduits, pipes, and other materials while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have experience in gas distribution operations, HDD equipment, and polyethylene fusion techniques, with a strong focus on troubleshooting and maintaining a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate horizontal directional drilling machinery to install conduits, cables, and pipes for gas distribution infrastructure.
  • Prepare job sites by reviewing project plans, blueprints, and identifying utility locations. Set up equipment and establish a safe work environment.
  • Perform pilot bores, reaming, and pullbacks as per project specifications. Operate mini excavators and other heavy equipment for underground installations.
  • Locate and avoid underground utilities using electronic locating equipment. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices.
  • Perform trenching and excavation for fiber optic and gas infrastructure installations.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on HDD equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, as-built records, and other documentation required by project management.
  • Perform fusion processes including butt heat fusion, electrofusion, sidewall fusion, and socket fusion for gas line installations.
  • Support the installation and connection of gas pipelines following industry standards.
  • Conduct quality checks on completed work to ensure compliance with project and industry standards.
  • Ensure hand and power tools are in proper working order and perform basic maintenance as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the gas industry.
  • Prior experience operating Vermeer drills and performing drill locating.
  • Knowledge of polyethylene fusion processes.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction plans, blueprints, and maps.
  • Strong understanding of underground utility locating and safety protocols.
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on HDD and fusion equipment.
  • Valid driver/operator license.

Nice-to-haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Knowledge of gas distribution operations and underground utility installations.
  • Willingness to travel as required for projects.
