About the position

The Gas Technician - 1st Class position involves performing tasks related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system for Pike County Light & Power. Under the supervision of the Gas Chief, the technician will handle meter installations, inspections, leak investigations, and customer interactions, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Turn-on and turn-off (installation and removal) of new and existing gas and electric meters.
  • Shut off notices and lock for non-payment activities for gas and electric customers.
  • Perform inspection and oversight of third-party contractors at the direction of the Gas Chief.
  • Respond to gas leak/odor calls and properly investigate and classify hazards.
  • Respond to Underground Facility Locate requests to locate and mark-out Company facilities.
  • Perform fitter type work including meter and regulator piping fabrication, service and main installation, and leak repair.
  • Conduct periodic system inspections and surveys.
  • Perform inspection, testing, and maintenance of regulators, meters, and other equipment.
  • Read Company meters and change gas and electric meters as necessary.
  • Maintain gas inventory and discuss service issues with customers.
  • Create and maintain records associated with work activities.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • General working knowledge of gas construction
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • 1 year of experience in the natural gas field
  • 2 years of field operations experience in electric and gas construction preferred
  • Familiarity with gas distribution systems and applicable regulations
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Pass a pre-employment and random alcohol and drug testing.

  • Experience with customer service in the gas industry
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental practices
  • Ability to work extended overtime
