About the position

The Gatehouse Attendant I plays a crucial role in the daily operations at the landfill, Material Recovery Facility (MRF), or transfer station. This position is responsible for providing professional customer service while ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and company policies. The attendant will monitor and record the activities of incoming waste collection trucks, inspect the contents of these vehicles, and collect disposal fees from customers. The role requires the use of personal protective equipment as mandated and adherence to cash handling procedures to ensure the security of financial transactions. In addition to customer service, the Gatehouse Attendant I is tasked with reporting incidents to the Landfill Compliance Manager and maintaining accurate collection records. This includes filing documentation and safeguarding cash in designated locations. The attendant will also be responsible for responding to radio calls and completing reports related to metal collections at the MRF gatehouse. A critical part of the job involves obtaining a debriefing from the outgoing attendant, reviewing activity and collection records from the previous shift, and noting any issues that may need addressing. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the operations of the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment when and where required.
  • Comply with the company's cash handling procedures.
  • Provide courteous, professional customer service.
  • Comply with all governmental regulations pertaining to waste disposal, metal purchasing and shipping.
  • Monitor and record incoming waste collection trucks and inspect the contents of incoming vehicles.
  • Collect disposal fees from customers.
  • Report all incidents to the Landfill Compliance Manager.
  • File collection records and safeguard cash in the appropriate location.
  • Monitor and respond to radio calls.
  • Complete and submit reports on metal collections at the MRF gatehouse.
  • Obtain a debriefing from the outgoing attendant, examine activity and collection records from the previous shift and note any problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Written and verbal fluency in English
  • Basic computer and internet navigation skills
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to identify the size and type of collection vehicles
  • Ability to measure non-standard trucks and compute load sizes in cubic yards
  • Ability to identify hazardous and special wastes
  • Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Professional personal demeanor
  • Reliable transportation
  • Availability to work after standard business hours, holidays and weekends, as scheduled

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • One year of related experience
  • Must pass a tele-screen and 10-key tests
