About the position

The position involves setting up and operating gear grinding, wheel dress, and balancing machines to produce rough and finish ground splines, spurs, and helical gears. The role requires following specific instructions for machine operation and setup, utilizing various hand tools and precision instruments, and maintaining quality standards throughout the machining process.

Responsibilities

  • Follow specific instructions to set up and operate gear-grinding machines and associated wheel dress and balancing equipment.
  • Receive assistance and instruction on more involved setups.
  • Use hand tools, gauges, and dial indicators to install involute cams, yokes, arbors, and work pieces.
  • Use optical equipment to present wheel dresser tools and balance and dress wheels as required.
  • Indicate work piece between bench centers prior to loading grinder and make necessary adjustments.
  • Check and record work piece pitch and root diameters prior to grinding.
  • Monitor machine operations and check finished parts prior to unloading.
  • Visually check parts for finish, root profile, and indications of surface burn or tempering.
  • Maintain records of all finish dimensions and obtain inspection acceptance of finished parts.
  • Perform other related work of comparable or lower skill level.
  • Follow directions of higher-grade operators or Working Leader to resolve problems.
  • Refer questionable conditions or recurring difficulties to working leader or supervision.
  • Perform operator checklist as required and comply with all EH&S procedures.
  • Segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
  • May be assigned to carry out tasks not specifically listed within the job description.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of machining characteristics and qualities of metals.
  • Ability to make calculations involving shop mathematics and handbook formulas including algebra and trigonometry.
  • Use of precision instruments such as dial indicators, blade and ball micrometers, and height gauges.
  • Equivalent to a minimum of 2 years high school or a minimum of 6-9 months of trades training in a particular trade or field.
  • Over 3 months up to 1 year experience.
