About the position

The GEAR UP College and Career Counselor is responsible for providing direct college and career services to GEAR UP-3 cohort students and their families. This role involves academic counseling, career guidance, and support in college admissions processes, including financial aid assistance. The counselor will collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance the educational and career opportunities for students, ensuring effective implementation of the GEAR UP Program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and college and career counseling services to GEAR UP students.
  • Offer career and college entrance information and assistance to students, teachers, parents, and counselors in small groups and one-to-one.
  • Collaborate with College & Career Counselors to schedule college visits, college representative visits, and career-related speakers.
  • Plan, organize, develop, and implement career events and publications in collaboration with GEAR UP lead counselors.
  • Counsel cohort students regarding state and district tests and prepare them for college entrance exams.
  • Provide financial aid counseling and support for FAFSA completion.
  • Support students involved in mentoring, job shadowing, and internship programs.
  • Participate in the development of the annual action plan for GEAR UP.
  • Implement all career and counseling activities and submit matching funds documents to the Lead Counselor/School District Liaison.
  • Enter college and career program and student data weekly and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide monthly program updates to the school district Lead Counselor/Liaison.
  • Share GEAR UP information with other GEAR UP school counselors.
  • Participate in on-site evaluation visits and all GEAR UP training and professional development.
  • Attend regional monthly GEAR UP staff meetings and travel to school district monthly meetings.
  • Support tutoring as needed to assist students.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree with a major in counseling, psychology, education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in school counseling in grades 7-12.
  • Current and valid Pennsylvania certification in secondary counseling.
  • Knowledge of school district curriculum and college access requirements.
  • Computer skills in the latest operating systems of Microsoft Windows and associated software.
  • Experience in teaching Mathematics or English preferred.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Satisfactory work record & criminal/child abuse clearances (Acts 34, 114, and 151) as applicable.
