About the position

The General Accountant at U.S. Steel is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of invoices by coordinating with the Commercial Group. This role involves assisting in monthly closing processes, managing prepaid items, recording liabilities, and reconciling balance sheet accounts. The accountant will also develop internal controls, support compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, and manage intercompany transactions.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure Safety, Environmental, Quality requirements and ResponsibleSteel requirements are followed.
  • Develop IT and manual internal controls to ensure complete and accurate financial records.
  • Support the documentation of internal controls in compliance with Section 404 of Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Coordinate with the Commercial Group to retrieve pricing and order entry data for correct invoicing.
  • Manage all credit memos and prepare root-cause analysis for errors.
  • Manually enter any invoicing needed.
  • Ensure all credits or invoices are entered in the proper period and reflected in Great Plains for financial accuracy.
  • Provide necessary accruals needed.
  • Reconcile sales information to verify completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform month-end closing procedures surrounding invoicing, AR, and some AP.
  • Oversee all intercompany transactions between BRS OpCo and USS and BRS2.
  • Develop process improvements when opportunities arise.
  • Calculate and record journal entries to facilitate month-end close.
  • Research non-routine and unusual accounting transactions.
  • Reconcile Intercompany AR, AP and Sales to intercompany balances.
  • Reconcile various balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist with special projects as needed.

Requirements

  • An accounting or finance degree
  • Fundamental knowledge of GAAP
  • 3+ years similar experience
  • Working knowledge of Great Plains accounting software, a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
