About the position

California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is seeking a General Accounting Manager to join their team in Monterey, CA. This position is pivotal in ensuring the integrity of the university's financial reporting and accounting practices. Under the general direction of the Accounting Director, the General Accounting Manager will be responsible for planning, managing, and monitoring the work performed by the General Accounting Team within the Accounting Department. This role is essential for the proper accounting and oversight of the operating ledger and legal reporting of all funds of the University. The position offers hybrid flexibility, allowing for remote work one day each week, and can be filled at either Admin Level I or Level II, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The General Accounting Manager will oversee the timely monthly and year-end fiscal reporting of all University funds to the Chancellor's Office, the State Controller's Office, and the State Treasurer of California. This includes assisting the Financial Reporting Team in preparing GAAP financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, ensuring timely issuance of financial reports. The manager will also play a crucial role in supporting internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation, explanations, and supporting schedules related to journal entries, general ledger balances, and financial transactions. In addition to these responsibilities, the General Accounting Manager will manage the operating general ledger system, which encompasses the Accounts Receivable and aging processes, Accounts Payable auditing processes, and account reconciliations. The role requires ensuring the accuracy and completeness of ledger balances, overseeing the preparation and posting of journal entries, and providing guidance and training to unit personnel. The manager will also represent the unit on campus-wide and system-wide committees and assist in developing policies and procedures impacting the Accounting Department. For Admin Level II, the role includes leading the General Accounting Team with minimal supervision, collaborating with other teams to identify and deploy applications to support the Accounting Team, and mentoring direct reports to align with their career aspirations.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage, and monitor the work of the General Accounting Team.
  • Ensure proper accounting and financial reporting of all funds and ledgers.
  • Prepare timely monthly and year-end fiscal reports for the Chancellor's Office and State Controller's Office.
  • Assist in the preparation of GAAP financial statements in accordance with accounting principles.
  • Support internal and external auditors during financial audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of CSUMB data to state and federal governments and accreditation organizations.
  • Manage the operating general ledger system, including Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable processes.
  • Oversee the preparation and posting of journal entries to accurately record financial transactions.
  • Hire, train, and guide unit personnel, setting goals and preparing performance evaluations.
  • Act as the unit representative on campus-wide and system-wide committees.
  • Assist in the development, analysis, and documentation of policies and procedures for the Accounting Department.
  • For Admin Level II: Independently lead the General Accounting Team with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate with the Financial Reporting Team and Operations Support and Innovation Team.
  • Identify areas for improvement and propose innovative solutions to streamline processes.
  • Mentor and develop direct reports in alignment with their career aspirations.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or closely related field.
  • For Admin Level I: Two years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience.
  • For Admin Level II: Four years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting methods and related rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques to evaluate complex accounting problems.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
