About the position

The General Attorney position at the U.S. Office of Inspector General involves providing legal advisory services related to audits, investigations, and operations of the Department of Education. The role requires expertise in various legal areas, including education law, federal grant law, and ethics, while ensuring compliance with federal regulations. The attorney will independently analyze legal issues, develop strategies, and present legal conclusions to high-level officials, contributing to the effectiveness and integrity of the Department's programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advisory services on audits, investigations, and Office of Inspector General operations.
  • Advise on Education law, federal grant and procurement law, ethics matters, and whistleblower laws.
  • Analyze legal issues and develop strategies to address them.
  • Present legal conclusions to high-level organizational officials and outside counsel.
  • Draft critical guidance, advice, or presentations central to the disposition of legal matters.
  • Communicate with managers and executives of the OIG and other organizations.

Requirements

  • Must have earned a professional law degree (J.D. or LL.B) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of a Bar of a State or Territory of the U.S., the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
  • Three years of professional legal experience equivalent to an attorney at the GS-12 level for GS-13 applicants.
  • Four years of professional legal experience equivalent to an attorney at the GS-13 level for GS-14 applicants.
  • Experience advising on FOIA/Privacy Act requests and appeals, federal information law matters, and privacy law matters.
  • Experience advising on federal criminal investigations, audit matters, or Office of Inspector General matters.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in federal ethics matters or federal whistleblower matters.
