About the position

The General Ledger Accountant plays a crucial role in the Financial Services department at Cal Poly Pomona, responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the General Ledger and subsidiary systems. This position involves analyzing and reconciling financial data, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations. The accountant will work closely with various departments to maintain accurate financial records and support the university's financial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily activities of the General Ledger and subsidiary feeder systems.
  • Analyze and reconcile imported and interfaced data from PeopleSoft systems.
  • Process and submit month-end and year-end financial information to the State Controller's Office and Chancellor's Office.
  • Prepare university bank reconciliations and process various journal entries.
  • Analyze due to/due from relationships and prepare necessary financial adjustments and cash transfers.
  • Review and ensure successful completion of PeopleSoft overnight processes.
  • Provide training to departments on chargeback requests and ensure accuracy for uploads into PeopleSoft.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to meet operational needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a closely related field required.
  • Two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience required.
  • Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Advanced proficiency with current work processing and spreadsheet software programs.
  • General understanding of internal control methods.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret accounting data and prepare accurate financial statements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a university/non-profit setting using PeopleSoft applications.
  • Experience preparing multi-account bank reconciliations.
  • MBA or CPA.
