About the position

The General Ledger Accountant at Texas Baptists will be responsible for analyzing balance sheet accounts, preparing records, and conducting journal entry preparation, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. This role involves maintaining a fixed asset sub-ledger, preparing for annual audits, and providing training and assistance to staff regarding general ledger research. The position requires a commitment to the organization's religious mission and values, as well as compliance with relevant laws.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and reconcile balance sheet accounts every month accurately and timely.
  • Research outstanding reconciling items from monthly reconciliations and prepare corrections for reconciling items.
  • Maintain fixed assets sub-ledger including reconciliation to general ledger and maintenance of supporting documentation.
  • Review and validate journal entries prepared outside of the Finance & Accounting department.
  • Review and validate accounts payable adjustments prepared outside of the Finance & Accounting department.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations and research outstanding items accurately and timely.
  • Provide accounting expertise and assistance to budget users and other non-accounting personnel.
  • Accurately prepare and maintain Building Use allocation journal entries.
  • Accurately prepare and maintain Building Telephone allocation journal entries.
  • Prepare and enter journal entries into the General Ledger system accurately and timely.
  • Prepare and enter accounts payable adjustments into the accounting system accurately and timely.
  • Serve as backup to the Center Administrative Assistant as needed.
  • Prepare monthly budget analysis reports.
  • Assist budget users with entering budgets into the budgeting software.
  • Assist with the preparation of PBC worksheets for auditors accurately and timely.
  • Accurately enter data into the computer system; prepare accurate correspondence and documents as required.
  • Assist with daily mail and date stamp documents accurately.
  • Verify that the amount of the checks and documents match during processing, and verify that all checks are signed appropriately.
  • Prepare deposits - a deposit may consist of single or multiple batches.
  • Validate constituent and project coding on giving forms along with verification of proper support.
  • Effectively work with co-workers to meet timely objectives established for the successful completion of a project.
  • Promptly answer phones, take messages, and respond to requests for information accurately and timely.
  • Attend meetings and participate in training as required.
  • Maintain compliance with all Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) policies and procedures, as well as all state and federal laws.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in accounting or a related field preferred, with 6-12 hours in accounting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • In-depth understanding of accounting, generally acquired through 2+ years of general accounting work experience including general ledger and fund accounting.
  • Active membership in a church supportive of the BGCT during employment.
  • Commitment to Christian principles and teachings both professionally and personally, with an understanding and commitment to Baptist distinctives.
  • Ability to work with 40 or more high-volume accounts.
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to research general ledger transactions; ability to evaluate the validity of journal entry coding.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to complete balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Proficient Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience using accounting software such as Financial Edge or other similar products.
  • Proficient working knowledge of various office software including Microsoft Word, Google Mail, and internet skills.
  • Ability to operate a 10-key calculator by touch.
  • Ability to operate standard office machinery including copier, fax, and calculator.
  • Proficient time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines and time constraints; ability to work under minimal supervision effectively; ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions regarding responsibilities.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English; ability to communicate clearly in face-to-face interactions; ability to hear and receive verbal instructions.
  • Ability to remember verbal and written tasks/assignments; ability to concentrate on fine detail with some interruption.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff; professionalism in the workplace.
