About the position

The General Ledger Accountant position at the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is a full-time role focused on ensuring the accurate presentation of the agency's financial position. The ideal candidate will perform various reconciliations, prepare journal entries, and assist in financial analyses, contributing to the agency's financial integrity and compliance with accounting standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various reconciliations to ensure the accuracy of financial transactions.
  • Prepare recurring and non-recurring journal entries to ensure financial statements are accurately reflected.
  • Serve as backup for payroll certification and assist with year-end attachments due to DOA.
  • Perform various analyses on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
  • Assist in preparing the agency's annual indirect cost proposal.
  • Update policies and procedures as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the CAPP manual and its application.
  • Experience working with automated Financial Management/Accounting Systems.
  • Experience performing accounting activities in accordance with GAAP and GASB.
  • Experience providing technical assistance in accounting and/or financial policies and procedures with attention to detail.
  • Experience with preparation and review of analyzing financial transactions and reports.
  • Experience working in a finance, accounting or auditing environment within Virginia State Government.
  • Experience developing and/or applying policies and procedures.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to think strategically and cross-culturally, and independently implement new initiatives and projects.
  • Ability to articulate clear and concise program objectives and goals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional training/certification in finance, accounting, or business administration.
  • Experience and knowledge of grant accounting.
  • Experience with the Commonwealth's Cardinal System.
  • Experience with preparation of Commonwealth's End of Year Reporting attachments and directives.
