About the position

The General Livestock Manager at the University of Minnesota is responsible for overseeing animal care and production operations within the Department of Animal Science. This role involves managing undergraduate student employees, coordinating facility usage, and ensuring the health and welfare of livestock. The position supports the department's teaching, research, and extension missions, and requires a combination of management skills and hands-on animal care experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and train undergraduate student employees, including recruitment, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Develop and manage operating budgets for animal units, ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance with university regulations.
  • Coordinate animal care duties, including health observations, treatments, and general husbandry practices.
  • Maintain records on animal performance, inventory, and sales, ensuring accurate documentation of activities.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of class laboratory sessions and Extension events utilizing livestock.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field with at least two years of experience in a livestock facility or a combination of related work experience totaling six years.
  • Experience in record keeping and documentation related to animal care and management.
  • Moderate physical capability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds repeatedly.
  • Valid Minnesota Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in large animal research and/or management of an animal research facility.
  • Operational experience with skid steer, tractor, and livestock trailer.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact with diverse populations.
