About the position

The General Maintenance Assistant at the Honolulu Museum of Art plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of the museum's facilities. Under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager and General Maintenance Supervisor, this position involves performing a variety of general maintenance and repair tasks. These tasks include basic carpentry, electrical work, HVAC maintenance, plumbing, and providing event support, among other responsibilities related to building systems. The museum, which opened in 1927, serves as a cultural hub for the community, housing a diverse collection of over 55,000 works of art. The General Maintenance Assistant will contribute to the museum's mission by maintaining a safe and functional environment for both visitors and staff. In this role, the assistant will be responsible for completing minor repair work, which encompasses tasks such as repairing doors, locks, and door frames, as well as replacing light bulbs and window glass. Basic plumbing tasks, including unclogging drains and fixing leaking faucets, are also part of the job. Regular cleaning duties, such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, and vacuuming, are essential to maintain the museum's cleanliness and aesthetic appeal. The assistant will assist with HVAC repairs, roofing maintenance, carpentry, electrical work, and masonry, ensuring that all maintenance equipment is in good working order. The position requires effective communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a strong focus on attention to detail. The General Maintenance Assistant must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines while supporting a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees. The role may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed, reflecting the museum's commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all.

Responsibilities

  • Completes minor repair work, including repairing doors, locks, door frames, and handles; replacing light bulbs, sockets, switches; and replacing window glass.
  • Performs basic plumbing tasks, such as unclogging drains and fixing leaking faucets and toilets.
  • Conducts regular cleaning duties, including sweeping, dusting, mopping, and vacuuming.
  • Assists with HVAC repair, roofing maintenance, carpentry and installations, electrical work, and masonry.
  • Takes inventory of maintenance supplies and notifies the Supervisor of low or depleted supplies.
  • Assists in set-up for events and museum programming.
  • Responds promptly to requests for emergency repairs and clean-ups.
  • Ensures that all maintenance equipment is in good working order.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of one or more areas: carpentry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and proper use of hand/power tools.
  • Understanding of basic HIOSH/OSHA requirements, safety, and first aid procedures.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Strong focus on attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects/deadlines.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year of combined experience and/or formal training in facilities maintenance, construction, HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing systems.
  • Certification or professional training in related fields: HVAC, mechanical repair, heavy equipment, etc.
  • Museum facility experience.
  • Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Arts vision, mission, and values and a dedication to advancing the organization in a sustainable way for future generations to enjoy.
  • Valid driver's license.
