About the position

The General Maintenance Mechanic position at Joliet Junior College is a full-time role within the Facility Services department, classified as non-exempt and part of the union. The position involves a variety of tasks including electrical distribution and troubleshooting, plumbing repairs, carpentry, painting, appliance maintenance, and minor roofing repairs. The mechanic will also assist in snow removal and report any damages to the Maintenance Superintendent. This role is crucial in ensuring the functionality and safety of the college's facilities, contributing to a positive environment for students and staff alike.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical distribution, troubleshooting, repair, and installation for all voltages up to 480 volts, including lighting systems.
  • Conduct plumbing distribution and repair tasks, including copper fitting, black iron threading, and lavatory repairs.
  • Execute carpentry work such as wood frame and metal stud construction, drywall installation, and door hardware installation.
  • Carry out interior and exterior painting and finishes, including drywall repair and carpet replacement.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on small appliances like refrigerators and ovens.
  • Conduct minor roofing repairs on built-up and single-ply membranes.
  • Assemble and repair furniture as needed.
  • Report any damage to campus facilities and equipment to the Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Assist in snow removal when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge in one or more of the building trades such as electrical, plumbing, or carpentry.
  • Five years of working experience in building maintenance or construction.
  • Basic familiarity with job duties listed in the position description.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus additional technical school or related on-the-job training.
  • Ability to lift a maximum of 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in tight spaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team, following instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Eyesight at or correctable to 20-20 and normal hearing or correctable to normal hearing.
  • Ability to operate various power equipment and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
