About the position

The General Maintenance Technician at East Central University is responsible for performing a variety of interior and exterior building operations, renovations, and repairs to campus buildings, with a focus on carpentry. This role requires a hands-on approach to maintaining and improving the physical environment of the university, ensuring that all facilities are safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. The technician will engage in tasks such as general carpentry, cabinet and shelf making, and repairs to walls, doors, floors, and mechanical devices like door openers. In this position, the technician will be involved in building interior alterations and renovations, which include tearing down existing structures, laying out new walls, ceilings, and floors, and installing new doors, cabinets, and windows. The technician will also be responsible for exterior alterations, such as cleaning and sealing building exteriors, making repairs to windows, and performing roof repairs. Additionally, the technician will engage in cabinetmaking tasks, including laying out cabinets, milling materials, and installing various fixtures. The role requires a strong work ethic, professionalism, and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and the community. The technician must be able to lift heavy objects, work in various weather conditions, and operate company vehicles as needed. The position also involves a commitment to ethical and socially responsible behavior, as well as a willingness to assist in other maintenance areas as assigned by the Director of Physical Plant or their designee.

Responsibilities

  • Perform interior and exterior building operations, renovations, and repairs to campus buildings.
  • Tear down and wreck out existing areas within buildings.
  • Lay out new walls, ceilings, doors, cabinets, and floors.
  • Frame and build new ceilings, including staple-up tile on wood and metal grid-work with lay-in tile and sheet-rock.
  • Set in new door jams (both metal and wood) and install new doors and locks.
  • Install new cabinets, bulletin boards, coat racks, etc.
  • Lay floor tile, carpet, and vinyl or rubber base.
  • Install plastic laminate and counter tops.
  • Install new windows and storm windows.
  • Provide trouble call service making general repairs to all interior and exterior portions of any buildings on campus.
  • Clean and seal building exteriors.
  • Make repairs to windows and storm windows.
  • Perform roof repairs.
  • Form, pour, and finish new concrete sidewalks and curbs.
  • Lay out cabinets, make cutting lists, mill materials, build cabinets, and install them.
  • Build bookcases, picture frames, bulletin boards, stools, and trim work.
  • Assist in other areas of maintenance as needed.
  • Operate company vehicles to perform job duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent degree.
  • Technical training in carpentry and maintenance or two years of experience as a carpenter or maintenance technician.
  • Valid Oklahoma driver's license.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work from ladders.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to communicate in fluent English, both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with a variety of hand tools and power tools common to the carpentry and maintenance fields.
  • Knowledge of chemicals used in the carpentry and maintenance fields.
  • Good organizational skills.
