About the position

Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) is seeking a General Manager for Hardware Product Management to lead the commercialization and product development of our award-winning Quantum platform. This role is pivotal in guiding the Product Management team to define product requirements, investigate regional market needs, and collaborate with business development and sales to establish effective go-to-market strategies. The General Manager will report directly to the Director of Product Management and Hardware Engineering, Energy Storage and Optimization, and will ideally be based in the Herndon, VA area, with options for hybrid work arrangements. In this position, the General Manager will be responsible for creating a product requirements roadmap by working closely with sales organizations, software and hardware business development managers, and marketing teams to meet commercial goals. The role involves attending and presenting at tradeshows, engaging with prospects to understand future product needs, and ensuring that the Hardware Product Management team effectively establishes development priorities based on business requirements, industry reports, customer interviews, and competitive analysis. The ideal candidate will possess at least ten years of product management experience, with a minimum of five years in a leadership role, particularly within the renewable energy or energy storage sectors. Strong hardware product management knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a comprehensive understanding of the Energy and Power markets in regions such as the United States, Australia, UK, Europe, or Chile are essential. Experience in utility-scale renewable energy, particularly energy storage, is highly desirable. The General Manager will also be expected to manage a team of product managers, hire and train new team members, and maintain a deep understanding of how buyers utilize battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance their operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Product Management team in defining product requirements and investigating regional market needs.
  • Collaborate with business development and sales to define go-to-market strategies.
  • Define the product requirements roadmap in collaboration with sales organizations and marketing teams.
  • Attend and present at tradeshows and meet with prospects to determine future product requirements.
  • Manage a team of product managers supporting cross-functional teams such as Sales, Operations, and Marketing.
  • Hire, train, and support Product Managers responsible for the full product life cycle of BESS products.
  • Conduct market research and voice of the customer interviews to inform business strategy and product direction.
  • Build product requirement documents based on business and marketing plans for new products and features.
  • Oversee the creation of customer-facing documentation and marketing support material.
  • Maintain a library of competitive information and adjust product strategy accordingly.
  • Develop strong communication strategies with industry influencers and media.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure product alignment and effective communication.
  • Monitor regulatory and market rule changes affecting energy storage revenues and develop strategies to address them.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of product management experience in a product development organization.
  • 5+ years of people management experience in hardware product management.
  • Deep understanding of buyers for energy storage and renewable energy solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of the competitive landscape for BESS and energy storage solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required; MBA is a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results in a matrix environment without direct managerial control.
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills; Mandarin is highly desirable.
