About the position

The General Manager I is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the operational and financial performance of a distribution facility. This position requires strong leadership skills to guide both exempt and non-exempt associates, ensuring that the facility operates efficiently and meets its financial targets. The General Manager will develop and lead a team focused on managing employee performance, inventory control, vendor relationships, carrier coordination, and customer service. A key responsibility is to ensure that all orders are selected accurately and packed/shipped without damage, facilitating timely delivery to customers. This role reports directly to the Director of Warehouse Operations. In terms of operations management, the General Manager will ensure that all operational procedures are executed effectively for incoming and outgoing shipments, product handling, and maintaining high standards of inventory accuracy. The role involves developing a comprehensive strategy for the facility, assessing deliverables, and utilizing resources to eliminate process problems. The General Manager will also plan long-term labor needs based on sales forecasts and historical data, and conduct analyses of workload compared to labor hours and equipment usage. Managing a facility that typically spans 100,000 to 500,000 square feet and overseeing up to 100 employees during non-peak times is a significant aspect of this role. Financial responsibilities include managing the facility's profit and loss (P&L) and preparing budgets. The General Manager will audit billing activities for accuracy, ensure proper labor charges, and report on financial and operational performance. Monthly reviews of accounts receivable aging will be conducted, and the General Manager will work closely with the Director and Corporate office to recover balances promptly. Additionally, the role involves conducting annual reviews of customer contracts and recommending annual increases to the Regional Vice-President and Director of Business Development. Employee relations and development are also critical components of this position. The General Manager will ensure effective communication during daily pre-shift meetings, manage staffing needs, and oversee the onboarding and training of new employees. Setting department and individual performance goals is essential for operational success, and the General Manager will work closely with Human Resources to address employee relations issues and maintain good HR practices. The role includes providing feedback, coaching, and recognition to enhance skill development and acting as a role model for corporate values. Safety and security are paramount, with the General Manager responsible for implementing safety and sanitation schedules to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards. This includes coordinating alarm-monitoring systems, ensuring the facility operates safely and efficiently, and actively participating in safety initiatives. The General Manager will also oversee accident investigations and implement necessary improvements to prevent incidents and injuries.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures operational procedures for executing activities for incoming and outgoing shipments, handling and disposition of products, and maintaining inventory accuracy.
  • Develops and manages a comprehensive strategy for the facility, shaping requirements and assessing deliverables.
  • Plans long-term labor needs based on sales forecasts and historical data.
  • Conducts analysis of workload compared to labor hours and equipment.
  • Manages between 1-2 dedicated customers in the same building or public accounts in the warehouse.
  • Typically manages 100,000 - 500,000 square feet of facilities and up to 100 employees during non-peak times.
  • Collaborates with teams from other facilities to share knowledge and problem solve.
  • Responsible for facility P&L and budget preparation.
  • Audits all billing activity for accuracy and authorizes purchase order requisitions and customer billing.
  • Ensures proper percentage of labor is charged to respective departments for accurate productivity identification.
  • Reports on financial and operational performance of the location.
  • Conducts monthly reviews of aging for accounts receivable and works to recover balances in a timely fashion.
  • Conducts annual review of customer contracts and recommends annual increases to the Regional Vice-President and Director of Business Development.
  • Drives continuous improvements to safety, quality, cost, and delivery while expanding capabilities within the warehouse.
  • Ensures daily pre-shift meetings cover productivity, operational problems, and workload forecasting.
  • Ensures proper staffing and support hiring for all facility operations.
  • Onboards new employees and follows a structured training schedule.
  • Communicates department goals and individual performance goals to ensure operational success.
  • Maintains good human resources practices and adheres to corporate policies and procedures.
  • Works with Human Resources to resolve employee relation issues and discipline actions.
  • Travels to other warehouses for department or company meetings as necessary.
  • Provides feedback, coaching, guidance, and recognition to enhance skill development.
  • Acts as a role model for corporate purpose, vision, and values.
  • Prepares and presents formal performance appraisals and recommends annual compensation increases.
  • Commits to self-development by staying current on information, tools, and systems.
  • Implements safety and sanitation schedules to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinates alarm-monitoring systems and reviews sprinkler system testing.
  • Ensures the safe, clean, and efficient operation of the facility to meet service standards.
  • Supports and participates in all safety initiatives in the facility.
  • Performs safety observations to coach employees on safety procedures.
  • Oversees accident investigations and implements necessary improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 7-10 years of overall experience in managing a 100,000+ sq ft warehouse/distribution center with total revenues up to 1m.
  • Experience with Warehouse Management Systems (Manhattan preferred).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of warehouse/mechanical equipment.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, DOT, HAZMAT, FDA regulations and willingness to become certified in these areas.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle changing priorities.
  • Experience with seasonal workforces is a plus.
  • Experience with performance metrics, process improvement, and Lean/Six Sigma tools is desirable.
  • Excellent talent management and team building skills.

  • Excellent customer service skills with external clients.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must be on-call for alarm system or problems during off work hours.
