The General Manager I is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the operational and financial performance of a distribution facility. This position requires strong leadership skills to guide both exempt and non-exempt associates, ensuring that the facility operates efficiently and meets its financial targets. The General Manager will develop and lead a team focused on managing employee performance, inventory control, vendor relationships, carrier coordination, and customer service. A key responsibility is to ensure that all orders are selected accurately and packed/shipped without damage, facilitating timely delivery to customers. This role reports directly to the Director of Warehouse Operations. In terms of operations management, the General Manager will ensure that all operational procedures are executed effectively for incoming and outgoing shipments, product handling, and maintaining high standards of inventory accuracy. The role involves developing a comprehensive strategy for the facility, assessing deliverables, and utilizing resources to eliminate process problems. The General Manager will also plan long-term labor needs based on sales forecasts and historical data, and conduct analyses of workload compared to labor hours and equipment usage. Managing a facility that typically spans 100,000 to 500,000 square feet and overseeing up to 100 employees during non-peak times is a significant aspect of this role. Financial responsibilities include managing the facility's profit and loss (P&L) and preparing budgets. The General Manager will audit billing activities for accuracy, ensure proper labor charges, and report on financial and operational performance. Monthly reviews of accounts receivable aging will be conducted, and the General Manager will work closely with the Director and Corporate office to recover balances promptly. Additionally, the role involves conducting annual reviews of customer contracts and recommending annual increases to the Regional Vice-President and Director of Business Development. Employee relations and development are also critical components of this position. The General Manager will ensure effective communication during daily pre-shift meetings, manage staffing needs, and oversee the onboarding and training of new employees. Setting department and individual performance goals is essential for operational success, and the General Manager will work closely with Human Resources to address employee relations issues and maintain good HR practices. The role includes providing feedback, coaching, and recognition to enhance skill development and acting as a role model for corporate values. Safety and security are paramount, with the General Manager responsible for implementing safety and sanitation schedules to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards. This includes coordinating alarm-monitoring systems, ensuring the facility operates safely and efficiently, and actively participating in safety initiatives. The General Manager will also oversee accident investigations and implement necessary improvements to prevent incidents and injuries.
