About the position

The General Manager I (GM) position is responsible for managing a Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) or a small cluster of restaurants or points-of-sale with sales generally up to $5 million. The GM ensures that the restaurant is clean, staffed, open for business, and operates to high operational and financial standards. This role requires the GM to use broad discretion and judgment to make effective leadership decisions and is accountable for the overall success of the restaurant.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant to prepare for opening.
  • Deploy staff and resources to maximize profitability and accept P&L responsibility.
  • Assign work tasks, prepare schedules, and ensure all shifts are covered.
  • Provide consistent support, coaching, and encouragement to restaurant staff to achieve business goals.
  • Conduct interviews and make hiring, termination, and promotion decisions for associates.
  • Promote HMSHost as an employer of choice within the local community.
  • Ensure compliance with company and branch diversity and inclusion philosophy.
  • Oversee onboarding and offboarding of all restaurant associates, including compliance with badging requirements and training processes.
  • Monitor financial and operational data to meet unit goals and assign associates accordingly.
  • Recognize restaurant staff for their contributions and performance.
  • Champion Employee Engagement behaviors and ensure current contact information for all associates is maintained.
  • Ensure daily orders are prepared and units are stocked with appropriate levels of product.
  • Oversee receiving goods, processing invoices, and managing supply chain issues.
  • Maintain proficiency in management information systems and tools used by the company.
  • Monitor and maintain restaurant equipment and schedule routine service or repairs as needed.
  • Participate in company response to audits and minimize waste.
  • Assess skill levels of restaurant associates and coordinate training activities as necessary.
  • Embrace technology and inspire employees to adopt new technologies.
  • Maintain knowledge of brand standards and procedures to maximize relations and teach associates these standards.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase revenue.
  • Manage day-to-day activities of associates and resolve customer and associate questions and problems.
  • Implement marketing programs and comply with promotional activity to drive revenue.
  • Maintain understanding of sanitary, safety, and health standards and ensure compliance with laws.
  • Train managers and associates in wellness check protocols and adhere to health requirements.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of restaurant P&L management experience and 5-7 years of overall working restaurant experience.
  • Graduation from a Food Service Management or Culinary program may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement.
  • Demonstrated skills in team management, delegation, and issue resolution.
  • Ability to manage multiple and concurrent priorities.
  • Knowledge of HMSHost policies, products, service, quality, equipment, and operations standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing QSR, Casual Dine, Full Service, or similar complexity restaurants.
  • Ability to converse comfortably with individuals and comprehend instructions and policy documents.
