About the position

The General Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations of a facility generating up to $19 million in revenue. This role involves setting strategic direction, providing leadership, and ensuring effective and profitable operations while maintaining high production standards and a sound risk management program. The General Manager will also promote employee relations and facilitate business expansion.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee responsibilities and coordinate efforts of Facility Manager(s), Sales Manager, Administrative personnel, and Maintenance Manager.
  • Sustain a productive and motivated workforce by screening, selecting, hiring, training, developing, and evaluating personnel.
  • Adhere to all wage and hour laws and compensate personnel according to established guidelines.
  • Establish high appearance standards for all employees.
  • Ensure safe working conditions for all jobs and implement a Safety Program.
  • Plan and route collection services to best utilize personnel and equipment.
  • Implement corporate guidelines concerning the Preventive Maintenance program.
  • Establish an effective container repair, delivery, and switch-out program.
  • Develop and implement a cost control program that monitors buying practices.
  • Establish production standards for each phase of operation.
  • Promote an accident prevention program to reduce claims and recognize safe employees.
  • Enter payroll into the system bi-weekly.
  • Ensure Operations Supervisors utilize the Full Route Roll-Off Dispatch system.
  • Utilize Route Smart system to plan optimized compaction routes.
  • Ensure commercial and residential route audits are completed annually.
  • Conduct Roll Off account profitability analysis semi-annually.
  • Ensure a purchase order system is used for all purchases with clear guidelines.
  • Ensure all services are billed and revenues collected timely.
  • Review profit and loss statements monthly and make necessary adjustments.
  • Develop an operations profit plan including sources of income and cost of operations.
  • Partner with Sales Manager to develop a sales forecast for each product or service.
  • Establish pricing guidelines for each product/service.
  • Promote a strong customer focus throughout the operation.
  • Manage the sales force in meeting objectives and establishing priorities.
  • Ensure the sales team uses approved software to track potential customers.
  • Seek opportunities for growth and expansion in assigned market areas.
  • Identify and adjust to trends impacting service quality or profit margins.
  • Establish a system for reviewing and negotiating existing contracts.
  • Participate in local civic affairs and represent the company positively.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent experience in an operational environment.
  • Five or more years of experience in the waste industry or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of equipment required to collect, process, or dispose of waste material.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instruction manuals, and reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing a large team in a facility operation.
  • Familiarity with waste management regulations and compliance standards.
