About the position

The General Manager for the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Fort Wayne, IN VA Medical Center is responsible for overseeing all aspects of canteen operations, including retail, food service, vending, and sales. This role requires a strong focus on personnel management, financial accountability, and ensuring high standards of service and hospitality for Veterans and their families. The position is ideal for candidates with multi-unit management experience and a passion for serving the Veteran community.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all areas of canteen operations including retail, food, vending, and sales.
  • Manage personnel and administrative controls related to canteen operations.
  • Implement financial goals and program objectives as established by VCSCO and/or Region Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with inventory controls, stock schedules, food safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Develop promotional programs to enhance sales and customer engagement.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of direct food/retail management experience.
  • Experience with inventory management, supply cost, and shrinkage controls.
  • Proven track record of building sales and increasing profits.
  • Strong staff development skills and ability to assess business needs.
  • Hands-on leadership with a focus on service and hospitality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Experience with POS systems.
  • ServSafe certification required or to be obtained within 90 days of hire.

  • Associate Degree in Business, Hospitality, or Management preferred.
