About the position

The General Manager for the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Gainesville, FL VA Medical Center is responsible for overseeing all aspects of canteen operations, including retail, food service, vending, and sales. This role requires a strong focus on personnel management, financial accountability, and service excellence, ensuring that the needs of Veterans and their families are met in a fast-paced environment. The position demands a hands-on leader with a proven track record in multi-unit management and a commitment to enhancing the customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all areas of canteen operations including retail, food, vending, and sales.
  • Manage personnel and administrative controls related to canteen operations.
  • Ensure compliance with inventory controls, stock schedules, food safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Implement promotional programs and maintain financial goals as established by VCSCO and/or Region Manager.
  • Assess business needs and problem-solve effectively to enhance operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of direct food/retail management experience.
  • Experience with inventory management, supply cost, shrinkage controls, and P&L management.
  • Proven track record of building sales and increasing profits.
  • Strong focus on staff development and hands-on leadership.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc.) and experience with POS systems.
  • ServSafe certification required or to be obtained within 90 days of hire.

  • Associate Degree in Business, Hospitality, or Management preferred.
