About the position

The General Manager will oversee the daily operations of multiple waste management facilities in Southeast Virginia, focusing on safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. This leadership role is crucial for managing financial performance and driving overall business success in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement business strategies and marketing plans to support operational growth and profitability.
  • Manage budgets, monitor financial performance, and ensure operational goals are met.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, conducting routine facility inspections to maintain standards.
  • Hire, train, and manage staff, ensuring safe and efficient work practices.
  • Promote regular safety meetings and initiatives to ensure a culture of safety across all facilities.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment to enhance employee morale, retention, and productivity.
  • Organize and participate in employee engagement activities to build team spirit and improve work culture.
  • Ensure clear and effective communication between departments and corporate offices to align business objectives.
  • Lead investigations of workplace incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Serve as a company representative in dealings with community groups, local officials, and regulatory agencies.
  • Set and track both short- and long-term performance goals for each department, ensuring accountability and progress.

Requirements

  • At least five years of management experience within the waste management industry, including collection and post-collection operations.
  • Associate's degree in a relevant field required; Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent industry training in recycling and production operations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of OSHA regulations regarding workplace safety.
  • Familiarity with EPA guidelines and environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations.
  • Expertise in the waste management industry within Southeast Virginia and the broader Mid-Atlantic region.
  • Understanding of Virginia Department of Environmental Quality rules, including MRF operational permits and certification requirements.
  • Proficient in employee training, development, and performance evaluation.
  • Ability to analyze data, manage budgets, and present operational performance to senior leadership.

Nice-to-haves

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a plus.
  • Proficient in spreadsheet development and data analysis.
