About the position

The General Manager at the Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the performing arts center, which serves as a road house and rental facility. This position involves managing rental operations, collaborating on in-house productions, ensuring financial viability, and cultivating positive relationships with stakeholders to drive revenue and foster a vibrant arts community.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Athenaeum Center.
  • Develop strategic plans for optimized productivity.
  • Review and improve organizational effectiveness by developing processes and overseeing employees.
  • Implement innovative changes to enhance the work environment.
  • Seek out opportunities for expansion and growth by developing new business relationships.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas.
  • Manage facilities, including maintenance and repairs.
  • Oversee competitive bidding for subcontracted services and manage contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with fire, health safety, and emergency evacuation standards.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for facility maintenance.
  • Supervise front-of-house operations and ensure optimal patron service conditions.
  • Manage budget lines pertaining to maintenance of facilities and oversee financial management systems.
  • Coordinate and lead relationship management with major rental clients.
  • Negotiate contracts with rental customers and manage rental events.
  • Oversee the preparation of accurate financial reports for the Executive Director.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and government regulations regarding property and operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or a related management discipline.
  • 5-7+ years of experience managing performing arts venues or commercial real estate properties.
  • Proven success in a managerial role with strong decision-making ability.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and delegation skills.
  • Strong financial acumen, budget development, and reporting experience.
  • Experience in planning and executing capital projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Negotiation of contracts and vendor/supplier management.
  • Ability to motivate and lead employees, holding them accountable.
  • Familiarity with technical aspects of theatrical production and equipment.
