About the position

The General Music Teacher position at East Hartford Public Schools is designed for an enthusiastic educator who is passionate about teaching music to elementary school students. The role is based at Mayberry Elementary School and is set to commence in the 2024-2025 school year. The teacher will be responsible for creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that fosters students' musical abilities and overall development. In this role, the teacher will meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times, ensuring that the curriculum is tailored to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each student. The teacher will create a classroom environment conducive to learning, preparing lessons that are well-structured and aligned with educational goals. The teacher will also encourage students to maintain high standards of behavior and will guide the learning process towards achieving curriculum objectives. The General Music Teacher will employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to enhance the learning experience, regularly assess student progress, and provide feedback to students and parents. Additionally, the teacher will be responsible for maintaining accurate records, implementing school policies, and collaborating with other staff members to support the educational mission of the school. Professional development and participation in staff meetings are also key components of this position, as the teacher strives to improve their teaching skills and contribute to the school community.

Responsibilities

  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Strives to implement the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and evaluates their job performance.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Certified in subject area
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Student teaching, substitute teaching, or teaching in private school experience
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable
