About the position

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking a General Transportation Tech I or II to join their Fort Worth District team based in Saginaw, TX. This position is integral to the maintenance and operation of transportation infrastructure, providing essential support in roadway maintenance, equipment operation, and traffic control. The successful candidate will be part of a diverse workforce of over 12,000 employees statewide, contributing to the safety and efficiency of Texas roadways. The role involves performing routine transportation operations, including but not limited to, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, and assisting the public during emergency situations. Employees will follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision, allowing for a degree of independence in their work. As a General Transportation Tech, you will assist in identifying, repairing, and installing traffic control devices, perform basic welding, and provide support to local law enforcement at accident sites. You will also be responsible for maintaining highways and rights-of-way, performing roadway repairs, and operating various types of equipment. The position requires a commitment to safety and compliance with industry standards, as well as the ability to respond to emergency situations effectively. The role may involve working in inclement weather and requires physical stamina, as it is identified as physically demanding. Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
  • Performs basic welding as needed and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials, and products related to these activities.
  • Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control by placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic as needed.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices as necessary.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with standards and maintains highways and rights-of-way.
  • Performs roadway repairs and erects/repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
  • Hauls materials and equipment to job sites and maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, and comfort stations.
  • Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris, mows rights-of-way, and performs plant and landscape maintenance.
  • Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders, pneumatic rollers, and street sweepers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and routine servicing on equipment, completing various required reports.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, and helps the public during emergency situations.
  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.

Requirements

  • No education required for General Transportation Tech I; General Transportation Tech II requires 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid driver's license at the time of application; General Transportation Tech II must have a Commercial Class 'A' Driver's License.
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent; related technical training or education may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
