About the position

The Genetic Counselor at Hillman Cancer Center will provide expert counseling and risk assessment for genetic conditions to patients and their families. This role involves working collaboratively with a team of professionals, engaging in community education, and contributing to ongoing research and mentorship opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and update the genetic databases.
  • Implement treatment plan and make appropriate referrals to medical, nursing, social work, and psychological services.
  • Assist genetic laboratory services with interpretation and communication of results to patients and physicians.
  • Follow mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event affecting clinical care.
  • Provide comprehensive genetic counseling at all designated sites, including case preparation, review of medical histories, genetic risk assessment, and discussion of testing options.
  • Prepare and conduct lectures/seminars on human genetics and genetic counseling for various audiences.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of clinical investigations in genetics, including writing research manuscripts and grants.
  • Act as a mentor to genetic counseling graduate students from the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Maintain quality assurance for clinical genetic counseling services.
  • Communicate with patients and physicians regarding patient care/testing and interpretation of test results.
  • Serve as a resource for healthcare professionals regarding genetic testing and related information.
  • Coordinate genetic testing and insurance coverage for patients.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an ABGC accredited institution.
  • ABGC certified genetic counselor with eligibility for PA licensure or temporary provisional genetic counselor license.
