About the position

The Genetic Counselor position at IVI America is a remote role focused on providing genetic risk assessment and counseling to patients, particularly in the context of preconception and prenatal genetic testing. The counselor will work collaboratively with the Lead Genetic Counselor and is expected to operate with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong analytical and problem-solving skills. This role requires a deep understanding of genetic testing processes and the ability to communicate complex information effectively to patients and healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

  • Provides genetic risk assessment and counseling to patients or couples for preconception counseling.
  • Counsels patients post PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR testing.
  • Obtains and reviews medical and family histories, documenting them using standard pedigree nomenclature.
  • Coordinates and reviews results from PGT testing laboratories with patients.
  • Provides insights on testing results to providers and nursing staff.
  • Coordinates with patients' insurance providers to determine the correct laboratory for sample submission.
  • Communicates anticipated costs of prospective tests to patients after investigation with insurance providers.
  • Facilitates patient decision-making on prenatal screening versus invasive prenatal diagnosis.
  • Assists patients in understanding the risks/benefits of invasive testing options.
  • Fills out laboratory requisitions for genetic testing on behalf of providers.
  • Advises on appropriate carrier testing and counseling for recessive genes common in specific ethnic groups.
  • Counsels patients regarding results on major or minor impact diseases identified by multiplex panels.
  • Facilitates case preparation for single gene disorder testing, including data entry and review of clinical genetic reports.
  • Stays updated on new technologies in IVF, fetal medicine, and prenatal diagnosis.
  • Provides clinical evaluations and counseling for patients with suspected or diagnosed genetic disorders.
  • Develops policies and procedures for the Genetic Counseling Department.
  • Participates in case conferences with the genetic team to review patient cases.
  • Plans and conducts public and professional education programs on medical genetics and genetic counseling issues.
  • Provides support for the Oocyte Donation Program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree from an accredited genetic counseling program - required
  • ABGC Certification or Board Eligible status - required
  • Current state licensure or application upon eligibility - required
  • Experience using an Employee Medical Records (EMR) System - preferred
  • Strong interest in reproductive genetics and clinical diagnostic laboratory settings - required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team - required
  • Demonstrated expertise in continuous quality improvement - required
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills - required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality - required
