About the position

Barr is seeking a senior-level geochemist to join its growing geochemical practice across the midwestern and western US and in western Canada. We are open to filling this position in any one of our current locations. We are looking for a collaborative consultant and experienced geochemist to provide both technical and project leadership for our geochemistry team. This position includes work on a range of projects involving tailings and mine waste, coal combustion residuals (CCR), legacy contamination, and other multi-media environments. The person in this position will use their expertise in development and implementation of material and waste characterization methods and geochemical models to assess acid rock drainage/metal leaching, mineral solubility, water and chemical balances, and water quality. Technical responsibilities will include leading geochemical assessments, design and management of complex data collection programs, and senior review of discipline-based work packages, as well as preparation of technical reports and supporting documentation. Project responsibilities will include development of discipline-based scopes of work, schedules, and budgets and management and administration of that work. Other typical activities include participating in technical conferences and seminars, mentoring and developing staff, communicating with clients, and participating in meetings and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel. This person will help advance the state of our geochemical practice group through knowledge sharing, creative problem solving, and service development. The person in this position also will be responsible for client service and business development. Typical business development activities include building and maintaining client relationships, contributing to marketing campaigns and performing client outreach, fostering project opportunities, contributing to proposals and presentations, professional networking, and sharing Barr's capabilities with existing and potential clients.

Responsibilities

  • Lead geochemical assessments and design complex data collection programs.
  • Manage and review discipline-based work packages.
  • Prepare technical reports and supporting documentation.
  • Develop discipline-based scopes of work, schedules, and budgets.
  • Mentor and develop staff within the geochemistry team.
  • Communicate with clients and participate in meetings and negotiations with clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Advance the geochemical practice group through knowledge sharing and service development.
  • Build and maintain client relationships and contribute to marketing campaigns.
  • Foster project opportunities and contribute to proposals and presentations.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in geochemistry or related discipline.
  • 10 or more years of practical experience in geochemistry or related field.
  • Specific knowledge of low-temperature systems, environmental geochemistry, and the weathering zone.
  • Experience with thermodynamic equilibrium geochemical models (e.g., PHREEQC, WATEQF, MIN3P, Geochemist's Workbench).
  • Experience with mineralogical characterization methods and geochemical testing methods.
  • Familiarity with mineral exploration methods and mine waste disposal methods.
  • Extensive experience communicating technical results to diverse stakeholders.
  • General understanding of statistical methods.
  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise through technical publications and presentations.
  • Demonstrated business development acumen and client relationship development skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in geochemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience in geostatistical analysis and economic geology.
  • Network of clients in the mining, power, or related industry.
  • PG or PE licensure or ability to obtain licensure within one year.
  • Knowledge and experience with diverse mineral deposit types.
  • Knowledge and experience in mine pit lake studies.
  • Experience relevant to mineral project and NI43-101 technical reports.
  • Active participation in professional geochemistry societies.
