About the position

The U.S. Census Bureau is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Geographer within the Population Division, located at the Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. This role is critical in utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) and programming to analyze and interpret geographic and demographic patterns. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and reporting on various geographic datasets and projects. This position offers the opportunity to work with a variety of data analysis and programming methods to prepare spatial databases, map population patterns, and analyze results. The Geographer will also be tasked with describing and analyzing population datasets and the results of studies related to population patterns, as well as creating technical presentations for meetings and conferences. The position is permanent and full-time, with a salary range of $68,405 to $128,956 per year, depending on the grade level (GS-9 to GS-12). The role is not remote, but telework is eligible as determined by agency policy. Occasional travel may be required, and relocation expenses may be reimbursed in accordance with agency policy. Responsibilities

  • Utilize geographic information systems (GIS) and programming to analyze and edit geographic layers and demographic datasets.
  • Design, develop, implement, analyze, and report on geographic datasets and projects using various data analysis and programming methods.
  • Prepare spatial databases, map population patterns, and analyze results using GIS and other geographic methods.
  • Describe and analyze population datasets and results of studies of population patterns.
  • Create technical presentations for meetings and conferences.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Minimum education requirement: Degree in geography or related physical or social science with at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
  • For GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 level in the Federal service, or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree.
  • For GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 level in the Federal service, or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree.
  • For GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with programming in Python and R for geographic data analysis.
  • Familiarity with geo-demographic developments and trends.
  • Ability to present research and technical results effectively in meetings and publications.
